Series 5
.
This is the first series that there is a real, well used set for the upstairs.  Martin &
Louisa have the nice bedroom with the en suite bathroom.  During this series
James Henry's crib is in the room next to Louisa's side of the bed, so we don't see
anything yet of the room across the hall which will become his room.  We also
have a few glimpses of the window in the hallway just outside the bedroom door.

.
.
When walking into the bathroom, to the right of the door is a green ceramic toilet,
then a bathtub along the wall with a window at the head of the tub, a square inset
to hold shampoo bottles and a picture hanging on the wall.  On the next wall
(across from the door) is a green ceramic pedestal sink with a mirror on the wall
above.  There is really no place for storage, so items are sitting on wooden ledges
built into the wall around the sink.  There is also a picture and towel bar on the
wall at the foot of the tub and a small green chair sitting next to the tub.
.
.
Bathroom
.
.
.
In the corner behind the door is a dresser, but we only have a view of the top.  There is a white bubble lamp with a
patchwork shade on top, along with several miscellaneous items.  On the wall above is a framed print.
.
.
.
.
Along the wall, there are several pillows and stuffed animals on the sill of the large window, and a roundish vase in
the small square window.
.
.
.
.
Martin & Louisa's bed has a dark wood slatted headboard and matching tall footboard.  There is a decorative detail
in the middle of the headboard, and there may be a matching one in the front of the footboard, but we never see it
from that angle.  Martin & Louisa's wooden nightstands don't appear to match, but we can't see much of Martin's.
Louisa's lamp is a modern egg shaped style and Martin's is a tall metal classical style lamp.  Both nightstands are
usually pretty cluttered - mostly with baby paraphernalia.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
In the corner is a small, cute fireplace that is mostly hidden behind the crib.  On the mantel is a small black Buddha
head, a small framed picture of a young child (this picture was in Louisa's red bedroom in S3 and will be in
Martin's Consulting Room in S6-S9), a small mantel clock, some decorative cups, and various baby items.  The
large painting of Port Isaac that was hanging in the Waiting Room in S2-S4 has been put into a new frame (with no
mat) and hangs above the fireplace.
.
.
.
.
.
This side wall is not often in the camera shot.  While most of the walls are painted a beige color, halfway across
this wall it becomes a salmon color with vertical beige wood trim.  This salmon color continues on the wall on the
other side of the wardrobe.  Throughout the room there is wainscoting on the bottom half of the wall that is painted
to match the beige walls.  There is a dressing table along this wall near the wardrobe.  Atop the table is a large
mirror, a small white lamp, a small portable radio, and several other unidentified items.  Two mobiles hang from the
ceiling along this wall - probably something for James Henry to see as he lies in his crib.  One is light orange
butterflies and the other is white doves that hang in a circular pattern.  We can also see a picture on the wall - it
is the matching one to the rectangular painting on the wall on the other side of the wardrobe.  These 2 paintings
here hanging as a pair in the Living Room in S4.
.
.
.
.
Against the short wall next to the door is a large wooden dresser.  There is a very large sailboat on top of the
dresser and a small white lamp on the left side.  The lamp is sometimes missing, so it might be the one that was
seen on the dressing table - it seems to be a perfect match.  There are also a lot of unidentified baby items all over
the top of the dresser.  On the wall above is a rectangular framed painting that is a pair to the one on the wall on
the other side of the wardrobe.  These two paintings were hanging as a pair in the Living Room in S4.

Just outside the bedroom door is the hallway that leads to the stairwell (off to
the right).  The only thing we can see in this series is a portion of a window.  The
three items we see on the windowsill are a wooden lamp, a decorative brass dive
helmet, and an antique pair of binoculars.

Series 6
.
Although this was only the 2nd series using this bedroom set, they made some
major changes in the furniture.  The new bed looks very similar to the S5 bed, but
it doesn't have the larger slat in the middle with the decorative detail.  Both
nightstands and lamps are also new.  There is a new dresser with an attached
mirror in the corner behind the door, and the large dresser across from the foot
of the bed is gone, as is the dressing table from the other side of the wardrobe.
In the beginning of this series, James Henry's crib is still in this room, but at
some point he is moved to his own room across the hall.  In Episode 6, when
Martin's mother (Margaret) arrives, he is moved back into their room to give his
room to Margaret.  When the crib is in this room, it's sitting closer to the
wardrobe, not near the fireplace as it was in the previous series.  In Episode 8,
the flowered upholstered chair from the Living Room suddenly appeared in this
room next to the wardrobe (across from the foot of the bed).

There's one addition to the bathroom this series - a wooden changing table
against the wall opposite to the bathtub.  The only other difference is that the
picture above the bathtub has changed - the one that was there in S5 is now at
the top of the stairwell.  In one camera shot, there is a good view of the step up
into the room.
.
.
Bathroom
.
.
.
Behind the door is a taller dresser with a large attached mirror.  There is also a freestanding full-length mirror in the
corner.  This mirror is sometimes moved to the opposite corner next to the fireplace.
.
.
.
.
There is a chair sitting in front of the large window - it's one that was in the Kitchen in S5.  A tin pitcher holding
flowers, and a stuffed animal are on the windowsill.  The same round vase is in the little window.
.
.
.
The new bed is almost identical to the one from S5, but doesn't have the wide slat with the decorative detail.  Like
the previous bed, it has a tall matching foot board.  Martin & Louisa each have a new nightstand, and they appear to
match.  Louisa has a very feminine lamp - white ceramic with a white lampshade with flowers.  She also has a small
carved wooden chest, a round alarm clock, a couple of decorative tins, and several books.  On Martin's nightstand
is a brass candlestick lamp with a red shade, a clamshell travel alarm clock, and several books.  Martin's lamp was
also spotted off and on in the Consulting Room and Living Room in this series - they may have a couple of them.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Not very good views of the corner and the wall, but the small clock and the black Buddha head are still on the
mantel.  The new painting above the fireplace looks like it might be the one that was over in the opposite corner
behind the door last series.  The freestanding full length mirror is moved over to this corner in a couple of scenes,
but there is really not much else there.  James Henry's crib in there at the beginning and end of the series, but is
moved closer to the wardrobe.
.
.
.
.
This is our first really good look at the wardrobe in this room.  In Episode 1, Martin is getting dressed for the
wedding and he has 2 tie racks hanging on the inside of the left door.  At the beginning of Episode 6, he is looking
for a particular tie and this time we just see one of the tie racks and it's hanging on the inside of the right door.
We also get a good look at the mustard color wallpaper with a pattern of birds perched on branches.
.
.
.
.
There is no dresser on the wall between the wardrobe and the door this series, but the rectangular framed painting
is still on the wall.  The only time we see the lower part of the wall is in Episode 6 and the flowered upholstered
chair from the living room is there in that scene.

The sailboat that was on the dresser in S5, and the binoculars are visible on the
windowsill in a couple of shots.  There is also one shot that shows a stool or a
chair sitting in front of the window.  One view of the stairwell shows the picture
that was moved from the bathroom.  It also looks like there might be others along
the side wall on the right, but that's all we ever see of them.

We never actually see James Henry's crib in this room in S6, but we're meant to
understand that he is moved into the room after the start of the series.  In
Episode 2, his crib is still in Martin & Louisa's room when they go up to take care
of him during their dinner party.  In Episode 3, Louisa's alarm clock rings and
James starts to cry, but it's not obvious whether he is still in the room or the
crying is coming from the other room.  In Episode 6, when Martin's mother
arrives, Louisa suggest that they move James into their room and set up a cot
for her in his room - so he remains in their room for the rest of the series.

His room is a small square room with 1 window.  The window is along the same
wall as the 2 in Martin & Louisa's room and the one in the hallway.  This room has
wallpaper on 3 walls and the wall to the right when you enter is painted the same
color as the rest of the rooms upstairs.  As in the other bedroom, there is
wainscoting on the lower half of all 4 walls. There are a couple of pieces of child
themed framed art on the back wall, a mobile hanging from the ceiling in the
corner, and a glimpse of a pirate flag (the theme they would use for his 1st
birthday party).  On the right wall is another piece of framed art.  In the corner
behind the door is a small white dresser with colorful flowers painted on the
drawer fronts.  The window has green and white checked curtains hanging on a
wooden rod.

Series 7
.
In this series, we only see Martin & Louisa's bedroom in Episode 1 when Martin is
alone because Louisa is in Spain.  We never see the room again while Louisa is
staying alone in the house.  There are new nightstands again, a new lamp on
Martin's nightstand, and a new dresser on the wall across from the bed.
.
.

There were just a couple of views of the sink area in this series.
.
.
Bathroom
.
.
.
Behind the door looks mostly unchanged.  The antique binoculars have been moved from the hallway windowsill to
the dresser top.  Also there are the tins that were on Louisa's nightstand and one of James Henry's clock toys.  Next
to the window is the same wooden chair that was there in S6.  The round vase remains in the small window.
.
.
.
.
The bed is the same, but there are new nightstands on both sides - and they may match (but its difficult to see
Louisa's).  On Louisa's nightstand is the same lamp and carved wooden box from S6.  Martin has a new metal lamp
with a red and white striped shade.  His little travel alarm clock is still there.
.
There are no views this series of the fireplace corner, the wardrobe, or the wall between.  A new dresser is against
the wall across from the bed - similar to the one from S5.  The only shot of it is very dark so the items on top aren't
identifiable, but there is a new lamp matching the one on Martin's nightstand.  The rectangular framed picture
remains on the wall above.

The windowsill in the hallway has the sailboat and the decorative brass dive
helmet. In this series we finally get to see the rest of the hallway when Martin
runs out of the bathroom to get the ringing telephone downstairs.  I've repeated
the pictures from the overview at the top of this page showing where the hall
goes as it heads to the top of the staircase.

There have been some changes in this room.  James Henry's crib is now against
the back wall.  On the right wall is a new, large light blue wooden wardrobe.
Behind the door, the white dresser is gone, replaced by a short wooden
shelving unit.  Another framed picture, matching the two above the crib, hangs
above.  The roll away cot used by Martin's mother sits in the corner.  When Martin
moves into the room they move the crib to the larger bedroom and install the cot.
A wooden chair and small side table (which we've never seen before) are brought
in.  It appears that Martin has brought in the lamp from his nightstand - although
the red & white striped shade seems to appear pink when lit.  He also has his
little travel alarm.

Series 8
.
Again, in this series there were very few scenes shot in this room.  No major
furniture changes either.
.
.
Martin & Louisa's
Bedroom
.
.
.
Only a couple of shots from the bedroom this series.  One shows the addition of
a tall woven hamper next to the sink, and the other shows that the picture that
was above the bathtub in S6 is now hanging above the towel bar.
.
.
Bathroom
.
The same dresser with attached mirror sits behind the door.  Most of the shots of that area were pretty dark, so it
was tough to identify anything familiar.  The freestanding mirror was still in the corner.
.
.
.
.
Martin's nightstand is the same as in S7, but the lamp with the red & white shade is gone.  The lamp that he had
there in S6 is back, but with a tan colored shade.  Of course, his travel alarm is still there.  We have no camera
angles showing Louisa's nightstand, but there is one shot that picks up part of the shade on her lamp - and it
matches the shade on a lamp that sat in the Waiting Room in S7.
.
No shots of the fireplace again in this series, and just one of that wall.  The flowered chair is over against that wall
in this one shot - although it was still in the Living Room this whole series.  Maybe there are a pair of them?  There
is also a new painting hanging on the wall.
.
.
.
.
.
The only shots we have into the hallway show that the sailboat is still on the
windowsill.  In one shot there is a chair sitting next to the window, but then in
another shot (in the same episode) it's not there.
.
.
Hallway
.
.
There were only a couple of shots though the door this series.  The only visible
change is that the large wardrobe against the right wall is gone.

Two different chairs were spotted by the window at different times in this series.  The one with the mustard fabric
back was in the Living Room in S7, and the wooden one has not been spotted before.  For the first time, there is a
different vase in the little window.  This vase was in the Living Room in S7.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The dresser across from the bed appears to be the same as the one there in S7.  The ceramic lamp is new, but I
believe that two other items are familiar.  The wooden box looks like the one that was in the Consulting Room
almost continually from S2-S7.  And the square clock may be the one from the Consulting Room mantel in S7.
There is also a new painting hanging above.

Series 9
.
There were very few scenes shot in these rooms again this series -  and most of
them were pretty darkly lit.  We only saw the bedroom and a couple of dark views
of the bathroom.  Neither James Henry's room nor the hallway was seen in S9.
.
.
Martin & Louisa's
Bedroom
.
.u
.
We had one scene at night when Martin and Louisa were both standing at the
sink, and one scene shot from the bedroom door when Louisa walks out of the
bathroom.  One addition that is visible is a tall thin vase with some kind of silk
flowers sitting on the ledge to the right of the sink.  The hamper remains from the
previous series.
.
.
Bathroom
.
In one nighttime shot you can just make out the same dresser with attached mirror behind the door.  In another
episode when we see a shot of Louisa walking out of the bathroom we can see a little more detail of some of the
items on the dresser.  We can see a plant in a white planter (it was also there last series) and a blue ceramic bird.
.
.
.
.
The same bed has been here since S6.  Martin has a new nightstand, but it's the one that he had in S6 (he had a
different one in S7 & S8).  This one has an open shelf on the bottom and there appears to be a large piece of
pottery on the shelf.  The lamp is the same as in last series, but he has a new alarm clock.  We cannot see much of
Louisa's nightstand, but the small glimpse we got looks like it has an old fashioned red alarm clock with something
gold behind it.  Also, there is a tiny bit of a white lampshade visible, so it must be a new one since the last series.
.
We had one quick shot of the fireplace when Louisa was lighting candles.  It's really impossible to make out what is
there - 2 matching black busts or bookends?  Possibly a tin in the middle?  There are two lit tea lights - and several
more all around the room.  The picture above the fireplace seems to be some type of botanical print.  Although we
never get to see much of the side wall, the small dressing table must still be there because we can see the
lampshade when Louisa turns to talk to Martin as she is lighting one of the tea lights.  In Episode 8, the large
floor mirror is set in front of the wardrobe when Martin is changing to go to the wedding.  As he leaves, we can see
a small portion of the side wall and it is still painted the salmon color with the contrasting wood trim.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The little window is very difficult to see, but there appears to be a small picture and some type of ornament in the
window.  The chair along this wall is the same that was there for part of last series.  In the large window is a
sailboat that I don't think we've seen before.  There is a large seashell on the right and possibly an orange tin on
the left.  In the night shot we could see a white pitcher on the left.
.
.
.
.
.
The dresser across from the bed appears to be the same.  It has the same lamp and the same picture on the wall
above from last series.  New on the dresser is the White Buddha, who we have not seen since S4.  There is also a
wooden box, but a smaller one than we saw there last series, and some kind of round metal container with a lid.

You can barely
see a picture on
the wall to the
right of the sink.
I lightened it up
as much as
possible and it
appears to be the
one that was
above the side of
the bathtub in
S6.  We saw
a glimpse of it in
this spot in the
last series.

Series 6
The Upstairs area of the Surgery consists of 3 rooms:  Master bedroom, attached bathroom, and
(starting in S6) a small room across the hall that is used as James' bedroom.  The sets for these rooms
were built for use starting in S5.  In S1, S3, & S4, I suspect that they used rooms in cottages nearby for
the few scenes shot in Martin's bedroom.  Because of a picture I found from the set, I think they did
create a set for Martin's bedroom in S2.  The Overview section below has pictures and my speculation.
