A Magical Cornish Village
Doc Martin is
IN
Kitchen
The Kitchen changed greatly from S1 to S2.  In S1, I believe they used a kitchen in a cottage
somewhere in or around Port Isaac.  There were actually very few scenes set in the kitchen that
first series, so it makes sense that they were able to procure it a couple of times to shoot all of
the scenes.  In Episode 1, just a short scene with Martin and Eileen.  In Episode 3, the night
scene when Martin is brewing tea and Bert comes in to deliver some of his bottled water.  And
then in Episode 5 there were several scenes - most of them very short.  Some with Eileen, a
couple with Martin and Aunt Joan, and a couple of Martin at night before heading up to sleep.
One feature of this kitchen is that there is no opening to the Living Room - there is a window
visible in a couple of small glimpses we get of that wall.  (In the few Living Room shots that first
series, they actually shot in the room in Fern Cottage, which is used only for exterior filming.)

When they came back to film S2, they had constructed a set in the barn for the Kitchen and
Living Room.  They really did a nice job of making the set as similar as possible to the room
used in the first series.  You can see the comparisons in the S1 section below.

The room is almost completely open on the front to the Living Room, which is 2 steps down from
the Kitchen.  There is a sloped ceiling that starts above the windows on the back wall and rises
up at an angle toward the Living Room.  We've never really gotten a view of the front part of that
ceiling, but the ceiling in the Living Room is back to normal height.  On the right wall is a door
with a large stained glass insert.  This door leads down a short hallway to the Consulting Room
and the Waiting Room and is usually kept open, but has been closed on a few occasions.  Along
the back wall are two double hung windows, the one on the left is flanked by two narrow
sidelight windows.  The window on the right is opaque stained glass panels, similar to the one
on the hallway door.  Below the windows is a long counter that contains the sink, stove,
sometimes a dishwasher or under-counter fridge, and a few open and closed cabinets.  At the
left end of the back wall is a door leading out to the patio behind the surgery.  The left wall
contains the door to a small pantry, and the short front wall (that's not open to the Living
Room) has a large wooden hutch with closed cabinet space and two drawers below, and open
shelving above.

Table Area
.
The kitchen table and chairs sit in the middle of the room.  There have been 2
different kitchen tables - the first one was natural wood with 2 drawers on one
side and the second one is painted light grey and has one drawer.

The chairs have been a hodgepodge of different styles every year.  There are
often 2 or 3 different chair styles around the table.  Quite often there was one
chair sitting against the wall next to the hutch, and it was often brought over and
used at the table.

James Henry has had 2 different high chairs.

The table starting in this series is a heavy wooden table with a natural finish.
There are two long narrow drawers on one side of the table and each has 2
cup-style drawer pulls - but the one on the far right is broken off.

In this series there were 3 matching chairs in a traditional style and one in
slightly more modern style.

there in the previous series.

Again, the same wooden table.

The 3 traditional style chairs remain, joined by 2 new ones with a turned spindle
back.  Most of the time there were 2 of each around the table, but in one scene all
3 of the traditional chairs plus one of the spindle chairs were there.  Also, each of
these chairs were spotted against the wall next to the hutch at different times and
we saw one new chair there that had a solid wooden top of the back with some
spindles beneath, but only a small part of the chair was seen.

Once again, the same wooden table.

The 2 turned spindle backed chairs that we first saw last series have been joined
by 2 more, and most of this series there is a matched set around the table.  But, in
one scene there is a new curved back chair at the table - that chair can also be
seen to the right of the hutch.  In other shots of that space next to the hutch, we
saw one of the traditional style chairs that has been here in every series so far.

We have a new table this series.  It is similar to the previous one, but is painted
in a light grey color.  It also has a single small drawer on one side.

After the 4 matched chairs of last series, we have returned to a mishmash of chairs
around the table.  There are 2 new ones with a curved piece of wood down the
back.  There is also a new chair with a curved back, one of the traditional chairs
that we have seen every series, another new one with a curved back with
spindles - was only spotted in E8.  Another new chair spotted one time is a darker
mahogany one with a crackled finish.  Both the new curved back chair without the
spindles and the new mahogany chair were spotted to the left of the hutch.

For the first time, we have a high chair for James Henry - its in a dark wood with a
colorful pad featuring apples and pears.

The painted table is still here.  In this series we see the only time the table has
ever had a tablecloth - E8 when Louisa has prepared the dinner for Martin.  But he
never shows up because he has been kidnapped.

One of the traditional chairs remains, and a new, single chair has appeared - it's
taller than many of the others and has a classical looking back.  The other new
chairs are a set of 3 that have curved backs with spindles that are angled toward
the center of the seat.  The mahogany chair with the crackled finish sits over next
to the hutch in this series.

James Henry still has the dark wood high chair with the apples and pears on
the pad.

The same table is here this series, but turned around so the drawer faces the back
counter.  The side facing out has several spots at the top of the legs where the
paint has chipped off.

This is the only series so far where there are a matched set of chairs for the entire
series.  The other thing that is different is that the chairs are all more of a blond
wood color - most of the chairs in the previous series have been a darker wood.
There is also a new, delicate looking chair sitting next to the hutch.

James Henry has a new high chair this series.  It is a blond wood that matches the
chairs.  There are at least 2 different pads used this series.  The first one seems to
be a pastel color, and the second one is reversible with red and white stripes on
one side and black and white stripes on the other.

The grey wooden table remains, but it's been turned around again and the drawer
is facing the Living Room.  It appears to have been repainted because the areas
of chipped paint noticeable last series now have a perfect paint finish.

The blond wood matched set of chairs remains from last series.  There is another
new wooden chair sitting to the left of the hutch.  This chair looked fine in
Episode 1, but in Episode 3 there was an obvious crack on the back edge of the
chair.  By Episode 8 the broken piece of wood was missing.

James Henry has graduated to a booster chair this series.  It is the same blond
wood that matches the chairs and also matches his high chair from last series.
When he is sitting in the chair, the peach colored throw that sits on the chair in
the corner is used as padding on his seat.  There is also some type of restraint
that hangs off the back of the chair, but it looks like James does not need to be
strapped in.

Patio
.
The outdoor space behind the kitchen is a small patio just outside the back door.
Just to the left of the door is a tall compost bin in S3-S4.  Starting in S5, in its
place there appears to be a short metal cistern - possibly for collecting rainwater
for the plants.  There are also some metal trash bins visible in S8.

Starting in S3 there is a tall green wooden potting bench/hutch against the back
wall.  A very similar new one appears in S4 and is still there through S8.

Through the windows we can see the stone wall that probably acts as a retaining
wall against the hill behind the cottage.

There really is not much view of the patio in this series.  Just these shots when
Louisa comes in and then out of the door.  You can spot a little of the stone
retaining wall at the left.

The potting hutch remains pretty much unchanged from last series.  This series
we didn't see the cistern or the metal rubbish bins.  In their place were some
beach items - a glimpse of one of the colorful windbreaks we often see on
Cornish beaches and a child's beach shovel.  There's also a large colorful
watering can, and, interestingly, a pile of bricks.  Is Martin considering a little
DIY on his back terrace?
