It's time for Joan's funeral and everything seems to go wrong from the start. Neville Pote the undertaker arrives late and his son Harry volunteers as a pallbearer but can't bear the load and the casket is dropped. Martin's eulogy turns into a lecture on the dangers of obesity and heart disease while Louisa is forced to leave the church when the baby starts to cry. Martin's Aunt Ruth, Joan's sister, comes for the funeral but doesn't plan on staying very long - until she learns that Joan left her the farm. With his scheduled new appointment in London now thrown off schedule, it turns out that Martin will be the local doctor for at least 2 months. His own first cases are Harry Pote, who seems to have very brittle bones and Aunt Ruth who has self-diagnosed herself incorrectly.
