Martin is at his irritable worst and Louisa is having some difficulty with it all. He is indifferent to her need for space to work on the school timetable and when she suggests a color for their London home he's already had it decorated, all without discussing it with her. They have yet to choose a name for the baby and when they sit down to talk about it, can't agree. With his son Al off working for Ruth Ellingham, Bert Large is having trouble making ends meet. He turns to a dubious sort for a temporary solution. Louisa's mother Eleanor has run into an old school chum who obviously isn't well. PC Joe Penhale meanwhile is perplexed when his ex-wife Maggie suddenly re-enters his life. He still loves her very much but it's apparent that something is wrong. She thinks it's 2008 and has no recollection of their divorce.
